Jackie Leven: liner notes for ‘The Wanderer’

There is a wonderful Greek word - pothos - which means a rightful yearning or longing which can never be satisfied, sated, or wholly resolved. Such feeling can be experienced as a subtle undertone or as the overwhelming intensity of the day (or night), and we can be seduced by it into making a formidable mistake - which is to downgrade the significance of this vital haunting to ‘depression’. The valley or upland where melancholy waits for us can be a place of blessing - and to avoid such landscape is to learn fear of our own intensities.
